Concert by Molly Andrews
New Bern, Craven County
Born the granddaughter of a coal miner in Bluefield, WV, with roots leading back to Ashe County in the Appalachians of North Carolina, Molly is a quintessential roots performer. The mountain sounds of dulcimer and guitar take the audience down rural backroads with songs both spiritual and down-to earth. Come hear Molly Andrews for a taste of the distant past wrapped with a distinctly modern flavor. This concert takes place at the Trent River Coffee Company located at 208 Craven Street in Downtown New Bern from 8pm-10pm. African-American Lecture: “Sojourner and Her Children” (A Stage Play)-North Carolina History Center
New Bern, Craven County
7:00 pm
Guest Speaker: Rudy Wallace
North Carolina History Center, Cullman Performance Hall
Free Admission
This drama is about the life of the famed, former slave, abolitionist, and women’s right advocate - Sojourner Truth. She was first called Isabella and Belle, but christened herself Sojourner Truth as she, listening to the voice of God, began her journey into the world to help all. And though the play reveals the important aspects of her life, it emphasizes her relationship with her four children. The experience of separating from her young ones, due to the times, was so painful that it drove her to dream of a re-union. Throughout her life, though she was known to travel constantly and far away "a sojourner of truth" as a preacher and lecturer, she always found a way to return to her children who were still enslaved. This was a tough era for African Americans. Slavery was intact; the Civil War raged. But Isabella, Sojourner Truth, was bold and adventuresome, and a Child of God.
