Jul 1-Aug 31 | Public Field Trips on the Rachel Carson Reserve
Beaufort, Carteret County
Public field trips on the Rachel Carson component of the N.C. National Estuarine Research Reserve occur on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30-10:30am during June, July and August.
All programs are open and free to the public but reservations are required as boat space is limited. Call (252) 838-0883 to make reservations or for more information.
The Reserve offers three types of field trips: 1. Nature hikes occur during low tides, when the most amount of land is exposed on the island. Be prepared to get your shoes wet and muddy. We require close-toed shoes because of the abundance of oysters on the island. You may also have the opportunity to swim on the nature hike, so dress accordingly. 2. Boardwalk trips occur at high tide, when the water is high enough in the estuary for our 24' skiff to easily navigate around the island to our boardwalk located on Carrot Island. 3. Circumnavigation cruise on our 24' skiff around the Reserve allows visitors a chance to view Middle Marsh after a brief stop at the boardwalk.
On all three trips, we encourage you to bring sunglasses, hats, binoculars, water and sunscreen.
Please call the NC Coastal Reserve for specific dates and times for the field trips, 252-838-0883 or lori.c.davis@ncdenr.gov. You may also visit the website, www.nccoastalreserve.net.
All field trips are free; however, we do accept donations for our nonprofit organization, Carolina Estuarine Reserve Foundation (CERF).

Wilmington, New Hanover County
The Blue and Gray Navies
Two NORTH CAROLINAS – From Wood & Sail to Iron & Steam
Saturday, August 14, 9am – 6pm
Visitors Center
FREE with admission
Two ships named NORTH CAROLINA participated in the Civil War: the Ship-of-the-Line NORTH CAROLINA served in the Union Navy and the Ironclad NORTH CAROLINA served in the Confederate Navy. Carolina Living History Guild members will set up displays that highlight the history of the USS North Carolina and the CSS North Carolina during the American Civil War. Displays will include steam engineering, ironclad ship construction, navigation, small arms of the US and CS navies, naval ordnance (artillery), uniforms, and the “arts of the sailor.” Visitors will be able to view reproductions of period small arms and working models of steam engines, as well as many other items. Guild members will discuss with visitors the vast differences between the 1824 ship-of-the-line and the newly constructed Confederate ironclad gunboat, and how these differences highlighted the change in naval and military technology in the 1860s.
The Carolina Living History Guild is an organization dedicated to educating the public about the history of the United States during the French & Indian War, American Revolution, War of 1812, and American Civil War, with particular emphasis on the maritime and naval heritage of the country. Many of the Guild’s members are employees, volunteers, and/or board members at museums and historic sites across North Carolina and southeastern Virginia, and are dedicated to the preservation of the nation’s history and heritage. The Guild has conducted living history programs at many North Carolina historic sites and state parks, as well as at several national parks throughout its six years of existence.

Explore the Maritime influence on the culture, industry and recreation in the Albemarle Region. Demonstrations and presentations by local musicians, skilled craftsmen, vendors and artist.
10:00 am – 4:00 pm: Participate in coastal inspired hands-on activities led by the Junior Docents. 11:00 am – 11:30 am & 1:00 pm - 1:30 pm: Coastal Dialect, A documentary produced and directed by Neil Hutcheson. The NC Outer Banks is one of the most popular travel destinations in the world. Every year millions of visitors descend on coastal towns from Manteo and Kitty Hawk to Ocracoke and Harkers Island while some villages along the sound remain relatively isolated. Most of the early residents of the Outer Banks came south by boat from Tidewater Virginia and the eastern shores of Maryland and many of them had originally come from southwest England or the Ulster province of Ireland. Features of British and Scots-Irish English have been retained in the local dialect, through the language developed independently to take on a distinctive regional character. This dialect is now recognized as part of our national heritage and a vital part of coastal culture.

19 | African American Lecture: “Voices Between Two Rivers: A History of the African American Experience in New Bern, North Carolina”
New Bern, Craven County
Guest Speaker: Linda Henry-Simmons, Author and Director of Library Services, St. Augustine College, Raleigh, NC 7 p.m., Tryon Palace Auditorium, FREE
Throughout its 300 year history, African settlers and their descendants, both enslaved and free, helped shape the development, economy and culture of New Bern and North Carolina. New Bern had a substantial population of Free Americans in its colonial and antebellum periods, many of whom provided leadership in North Carolina and the nation. Enslaved artisans used their skills to gain freedom and advance financially and socially in the 19th century. Mrs. Henry-Simmons will highlight New Bern's development of the state's first Black printing press, public school, bank, Masonic lodge, churches and many other "firsts" that further demonstrate the progressive nature of the city's African American community. This program will also provide the public with a lecture and power point presentation on 300 years of dynamic local history as experienced by New Bern's African American citizens.
