Southern coast

Water ties this region together.

The Ocean and Intracoastal Waterway connect a series of island beach communities, each with a special claim to vacation paradise. Picturesque lighthouses lead boaters past sun-kissed shores and into the mouth of the Cape Fear River. A diversity of fresh water lakes add to the area’s abundant water activities, which include ferry rides, fishing, boating, sailing, surfing, kayaking, parasailing, kite boarding...basically, if it happens on water, it happens in the Southern Region.

Much of our heritage is also water-related, from Wilmington’s historic riverfront to famous sites along the River, like Fort Fisher, Brunswick Town and Orton Plantation. State parks and attractions are practically everywhere you turn. Sites, such as, the Battleship North Carolina, NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher, Poplar Grove Plantation, and Moores Creek National Battlefield provide interesting glimpses into the past.

With several excellent area courses, golf is an easy addition to your itinerary. Or plan a trip around one of the region’s many festivals. These are a great way to experience local culture, with celebrations covering everything from watermelons and azaleas to blueberries. The area even boasts a renowned winery!
