The Dismal Swamp Canal Welcome Center provides travel and tourism information for the entire State of North Carolina. It is located on US Hwy 17 and the historic Dismal Swamp Canal, an alternate route on the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. The Center is located three miles south of the NC/VA state line and the Dismal Swamp State Park’s entrance is located adjacent to this property. The Dismal Swamp is designated as a National Park Service Network to Freedom Underground Railroad site as well as part of the NC/VA Civil War Trail. The canal was hand dug in the late 1700’s and is the oldest continually operating waterway in the continental US. Hiking, biking, birding, paddling and photography opportunities are abundant.
